“An invisible red thread connects those destined to meet regardless of time, place, or circumstances. The thread may stretch or tangle, but never break.”
-Chinese Proverb

Thread is the artist's interpretation of her struggle with infertility and the adoption process. The installation will feature photographs of red thread printed on silk and hung from the ceiling by one continuous piece of thread. Visitors may cut, manipulate, or burn their own piece of thread.

The artist talk will focus on infertility, adoption, and the artistic process of the installation. There will be a children's art activity related to the red thread in an adjoining room from 1:15-2:15 PM, led by Lansing Art Gallery volunteer, Jane Schneider.

Thread is supported in part by an Individual Artist Grant from the Arts Council of Greater Lansing.

October Lecture Series With Toby A. Ten Eyck

Toby A. Ten Eyck is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Michigan State University Extension at Michigan State University. His research interests revolve around the intersections of art, risk, and the mass media. He received in PhD. from Louisiana State University in 1998, and joined the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University in 1999. He is also a permanent artist at the Craig Mitchell Smith Glass Gallery in the Meridian Mall, Okemos, MI. Toby is offering two lectures at Lansing Art Gallery during the month of October.

Peyote Stitch Workshop with Jenny Schu

September 19th, from 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Jenny Schu will be teaching 2 count peyote stitch in this workshop geared towards making a bracelet with a button-and-loop closure. Materials provided will be needle, thread and velvet pads or trays to bead off of. Beads and closure options will be available for purchase, or you may bring your own. This class is to jump-start you into beadweaving while still being able to make a finished bracelet.

This workshop is available $45 per person if signed up before September 7 and $50 per person after September 7.
Minimum 6 people to to enroll, max 12.

We will highlight your artwork to more than 47,000 downtown employees, 461,000 tri-county residents and thousands who visit downtown Lansing. In addition, Lansing Art Gallery will work with Downtown Lansing Inc., Convention and Visitors Bureau, and other local organizations to promote and sell your work. We encourage you to consider this opportunity.

While living in Chicago in 2001, he found a true obsession with salvaging scrap materials and giving them new life. He later began working with glass and tile, building murals with Chicago Public Art Group.

Brett’s extensive visual art experience includes exhibitions throughout Illinois, as well an exhibit in Denmark. Additional features include: ABC’s Extreme Makeover, Home Edition and Lansing Art Gallery’s City Streets Exhibit (2011). In addition to his current exhibit, please visit Brett’s recently completed mosaic mural in Lansing Art Gallery’s entryway.

Lansing Art Gallery presents a Jenny Schu Jewelry Trunk Show, Presentation and Discussion. A 2012 Individual Artist's Grant from the Arts Council of Greater Lansing, Jenny will speak briefly about the new direction of her artwork - sculptural bead-weaving. Jenny will offer audience participation and opportunities to provide feedback for attendees.

A local artist who is originally from Fenton, MI, Jenny obtained her Bachelor's of Fine Art degree from the University of Michigan School of Art and Design in 2004, concentrating in Fibers. Her signature artwork features dramatic beadwork designs, robust color pallets and beauty found in nature. Jenny strives to produce unique jewelry pieces that are not only inspiring, but are functional for everyday use.

Monday - Thursday: June 25 - 28, July 9 - 12, July 23 - 26
Cost: $75 ($70 members)/4 half-day sessions
lunch option: $5. per day

Summer Art Camp students will learn and experience creativity in the professional setting of Lansing Art Gallery and Education Center. Students will explore creative processes, techniques and materials with the guidance of trained artists. Each series of classes will culminate in a student art show! Open to all skill levels. Maximum class size: 15 students. Supported in part by National Endowment for the Arts, Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, Arts Council of Greater Lansing, Ingham County and Greater Lansing Potters' Guild.
